Rupee closes in on 69 vs dollar, its biggest day fall in 18 years

The rupee slumped to a record low near 69 to the dollar on Wednesday on growing worries that foreign investors will continue to sell out of a country facing stiff economic challenges and volatile global markets. 

The pummelling in markets sent the rupee reeling 3.7 per cent to an all-time low of 68.85 with the unit closing just a touch off that, at 68.80/81 per dollar, its biggest single-day fall since October 1995. 

It closed on Tuesday at 66.24/25. In absolute terms too, the 256-basis-point fall in the rupee was the biggest ever. 

An assault on the psychologically key 70 level now appears imminent, as intervention from the central bank seen mid-morning only gave the rupee a brief respite. 

In the stock market, state-run Life Insurance Corp, which was spotted buying shares, allowed the domestic benchmark index to erase steep early losses and end the day stronger. 

"If steps are not taken to implement the reforms necessary to tackle the structural issues, the government will be left with the so-called '3D options': debt default, devaluation, deflation," said Angelo Corbetta, head of Asia equity for Pioneer Investments in London. 

"In India, devaluation is happening now and deflation could be about to start. The good news is that the debt default is highly unlikely."

Witnesses of the falling meteor over the Russian Urals spoke of their shock and horror on Friday at seeing a giant bright light in the sky that many thought was a crashing plane, followed by a loud explosion that blew out windows in many buildings.

Stargazers are gearing up for a grand treat as the Moon and Jupiter will get very close tonight. Earth's lone natural satellite will first move towards the largest planet in the Solar System before inching below the latter. Jupiter and the Moon will seem to be hardly a half a degree apart, but do not let the optical illusion mislead you. Actually the fifth planet from the Sun is far away from the dense satellite on which Neil Armstrong made the "giant leap for mankind" back in Jul 1969. The distance between Jupiter and Earth is a staggering 6659 lakh kms. The corresponding figure for the Moon is just over 4 lakh kms. According to astronomers, heavenly bodies often approach each other. The phenomenon is known as appulse. In fact, the Moon passing by the planets one by one is a monthly occurrence.

What makes this particular appulse extraordinary is the degree of closeness. If anybody forgets to watch the skies tonight or dark clouds obstruct one's vision, there is no need to fret since there will be a repeat in less than two months time. Scientists have discovered that a barred spiral galaxy located 212 million light-years from the Earth is the largest-known spiral, measuring five times the size of our Milky Way galaxy.

Using archival data from NASA’s Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) mission, scientists found that measuring tip-to-tip across its two outsized spiral arms, NGC 6872 spans more than 522,000 light-years, making it more than five times the size of our Milky Way galaxy.
